Learn To Play Mahjong: The Basics
We typically teach a beginner series in 3 lessons for 2 hours each session to cover the basics of mahjong. Sometimes we will offer classes in different lengths. Below is a break down of our 3 week series. If we are teaching a one-off class, you also might see it labeled as Mahjong 101, etc. We break down the rules in a fun, social and approachable way.
Week 1 (or Mahjong 101)
Learn the history of mahjong, learn the tiles and deal, understand how to read the NMJL card, learn the Charleston, and experience a general flow of game play.
Additional Mahjong Classes and Events
Once you know the basics, you may want additional classes to continue to understand rules, develop confidence, and apply more strategy to play. Here are some ways to keep playing
Guided Play
Once you have learned the basics, the best way to improve is to keep playing! Play with an instructor present to help solidify rules and discuss strategies through gameplay and some targeted exercises.
Week 2 (or Mahjong 102)
Take a deeper dive into the Charleston rules and strategy, solidify rules of game play, and play ~2 games with instructor support.
Beyond Beginner/Strategy
Join us for lessons about strategies (pivoting, defensive play, etc.) and rules that may not have been fully covered in the beginner series (calling a hand dead, scoring, playing for money, and 2 and 3 person versions).
Week 3 (or Mahjong 103)
Review important rules of the game, discuss some beginner strategies for pivoting and determining which line to go for, play ~2-3 games with instructor support.
Social Play Event
Join us for a social play event at a local venue. You will be matched with other players by level and play (for fun!) The aim is to connect and socialize through gameplay. This is not a tournament. Win fun raffle prizes and meet new people.
